POST DRAFTED FEB 24, 2008

Hello to all that read this. i am a technology enthusiast with a background in Microsoft technologies, networking implementations, Linux communities and more. Pretty much I am every tech guy that has a pure interest in computers which surpass the basic need to find a job. I really like technology. In saying this I believe that whether I work for a multi-million dollar company which I have technically done or work at a retail store like Best Buy, my point is a valid one and if it is overlooked then it is at fault of Sony and the core linux distribution developers so on with another rant from another techy.

If you have any clue about computers and are aware of the current and future advancements of gaming industry, then you are also aware that Sony’s Playstation isn’t doing so well. Alot of people that have a Playstation 3 have no idea that they are in a currently losing battle with both Microsoft and Nintendo. This is highly unfortunate because they do not know that Sparta(Sony) is in a downhill battle with the Persian Army(Microsoft) which is slowly taking it’s toll on the once dominant gaming platform. The sad thing is that instead of Sony openly admitting there flaws and fighting to improve on there system, they(Sony) rather be naive and and in a state of denial as if they are still the top dogs like they were back in 2002. This is going to be there downfall.

I try to defend Playstation in every way by saying the same stuff that Sony says, “Give it time”. Unlike most I fully understand that the Playstation is full of completely new hardware that has barely been touched by development teams until now in comparison to the XBOX which is mostly made of parts that have been around for years. Multiple core processing is not new but Multi core cell processing is Neo specifically for the graphic and simulation design industry. What I am getting at is developers are used to the hardware inside the XBOX so it doesnt take as much to push out a new game for them in comparison to the Cell processor and bluray disc which has barely been tested. And when I mean tested I dont mean basic game testing in a closed environment, I mean consumer testing. I mean where every possible thing that can go wrong has gone wrong which makes the system stronger for it. XBOX has already proven hardware, PS3 has yet to be proven hardware. When I mean yet to be proven I mean just that. All looks good in the labs when one is developing this technology and doing benchmark testing but once it goes out in the field thats when it really gets tested.

What does this have to do with Linux? The same thing as it has to do with the lack lusting gaming experience people get from the PS3 platform. In order to have a great experience you have to have something to experience. In order to have something to experience in terms of the playstation you need developers that can create that experience. The Back in the 70s and even today programmers had a saying that without software a computer is nothing more than a paper weight. This is in the same like as a human without a brain. Mircosoft is all about software. That is how there Empire was created. Microsoft’s first computer was the XBOX as opposed to popular belief that all of these PC’s today are Microsoft PCs. But it is software that makes the computer as important as it is today and for some reason this concept is what Sony has forgotten. Instead of 8 cores I could has used for if it meant that they would have had more money to spend on software development. This is where Linux will come in.

For those that dont know waht Linux is. It’s an Operating System (similar to how Windows is a Operating system) which allows the system to operate that is open to everyone from end user to development to create, modify, collaborate, etc. on software and linux itself to make it stronger and more reliable as a OS. And it’s free. Sony has offered the ability for customers to run Linux on the Playstation.

For Linux to use the playstation in such a way to be more than just effective Playstation has to use some of the ideas that Linux does to make there platform more user friendly. Below I have added some links to some current projects being worked on to offer more capabilities to the Playstation 3.

Thursday I was fortunate enough to attend a staff training session for Baltimore City’s Public School newest investment, The Promethean ActivBoard. This Activboard is basically a rojector screen which has touch sensing functions. In other words, if your display your computer using a projector on this Promethean board you can use the screen as your input device instead of a mouse. This capability is achieved by connecting the oversized touchpad to your pc or laptop via USB or Bluetooth. When you shine your projector to the screen the installedsoftwareruns a configuration diagnostic to adjust and regulate the height and positioning of the projector to the screen. Once this is completed you can Use your machine on the board with a projector without a mouse just a pen sized stylus. You still need a keyboard but this is specifically for presentation in the office or in this case schools. Of course this isnt new technology but rather innovative concept of efficient use with our current technology. Its still a little annoying as a device because you still need a keyboard and the bright light from the projector can get annoying but its nice. I rather see the Multi-Touch Interaction Experiment implemented among all systems, especially linux based pc’s. If you dont click the link to see for yourself this Project is taking the next evolutionary test to the Promethean Activboard. Hopefully the Staff in these elementary schools take advantage of it. Or else reasonably good and expenseive technology gone down the drain like the Mobile laptop basestations for the kids. The machine’s only as strog as the users ability to manipulate it.
